Business Rules describe the sets of decisions and steps that are taken on business data to determine the flow of business processes; they are also used to calculate important business data based on a set of rules such as VAT tax, overhead costing, employee bonus, sales commission which have direct monetary impact. SAP BPM utilizes the powerful functionality of SAP BRM to implement many business rules in the organizations.

In many organizations, the core business runs on SAP. Important decisions related to pricing, freight charges, internal cost determination and other determinations are carried out within SAP. Though SAP provides standard functionality with country / industry customizations, many customers have made significant customizations and enhancements to make these decisions. With the advent of SAP Netweaver, it is possible to handle business rules in a flexible manner. Through inherent capability in SAP Netweaver for business rules management (acquisition of Yasu) and through third party rules engines, it is possible to get the full power and flexibility of external rules management.
